Why are BCBAs suddenly being asked to function as sleep therapists?

Research consistently finds 50 to 80 percent of autistic children experience significant sleep disturbances, and behavioral sleep interventions have a stronger evidence base than the off-label medications pediatricians often default to. With sleep medicine clinics scarce, BCBAs are being pulled into the gap. See our reporting on the sleep-autism clinical pipeline .

Can BCBAs diagnose autism — and what happens when states let them?

A small but growing number of states have expanded BCBA scope of practice to include autism diagnostic evaluations, a workaround for diagnostic backlogs that historically routed families to psychologists or developmental pediatricians. The move expands access in diagnosis-starved regions but draws scrutiny from psychology boards and payers. Here's what happens when they do .

What's driving ABA clinics away from the 40-hour treatment model?

A wave of 2024–2026 dosage research — including a 725-child JADD study and a PMC study showing no correlation between hours and Vineland gains — has undercut the Lovaas-era assumption that more hours equal better outcomes. Payers are using that data, plus OIG audit findings, to flag uniform 30–40 hour billing as a fraud red flag. See our reporting on the dosage reform reshaping clinical decisions.

How is the BACB's 2022 Ethics Code changing day-to-day supervision?

Section 4 consolidates supervisee protections that the 2014 compliance code left scattered, including an explicit prohibition on sexual contact with supervisees, mandatory documented feedback, and a duty to report supervisee incompetence. Section 1.11 also gives BCBAs a formal obligation to escalate — and refuse — organizational demands that conflict with the code. Full breakdown of what changed.

Why are session notes the number-one audit failure point in ABA?

Across all four completed HHS-OIG state audits — Indiana, Wisconsin, Maine, and Colorado — 100 percent of sampled enrollee-months contained at least one improper payment, with documentation deficiencies the dominant error category. Notes lacking specificity, missing signatures, or mismatched to billed CPT codes are now triggering pre-payment review and clawback exposure. We covered how payers are rebuilding the verify-then-pay model.

What does "assent-based ABA" actually require operationally?

Under BACB Code Section 2.11, behavior analysts must obtain assent from clients "when applicable" — meaning continuous, individually defined behavioral indicators of willingness, not a one-time consent form. That obligates clinics to operationally define assent and withdrawal per client, retrain RBTs to read refusal as communication, and rebuild documentation to capture the data. Read why assent is now a compliance requirement, not a philosophy.
